Actinic cheilitis is solar keratosis of the lip secondary to sun exposure. Dry, whitish gray scaly erosions and leukoplakia predominate. Leukoplakia is strictly a clinical term and carries no therapeutic value.

Herpes simplex transmission. HSV-1 is mainly transmitted via contact with the virus in sores, saliva or surfaces in or around the mouth. Less commonly, HSV-1 can be transmitted to the genital area through oral-genital contact to cause genital herpes.

The two main female sex hormones are estrogen and progesterone. Although testosterone is considered a male hormone, females also produce and need a small amount of this, too.

Estrogen plays a big role in reproductive and sexual development, including:
puberty;
menstruation;
pregnancy;
menopause.

The decline in estrogen that occurs with menopause also puts women at greater risk for bone loss or osteoporosis and inflammation of the tissues surrounding the teeth (called periodontitis). Loss of bone, specifically in the jaw, can lead to tooth loss.
