Inhalation sedation

Inhalation sedation is a light form of sedation. It is a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen breathed through a nosepiece. This helps the child to feel relaxed and accept treatment. Inhalation sedation is also known as ‘happy air’.

Which conditions are contraindications for inhalation sedation?

Other contraindications include sinusitis, recent ear surgery, severe psychiatric or personality disorders, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease – in those patients the respiratory drive is initiated by low oxygen levels as opposed to high CO2 levels, providing constant high concentration of oxygen during sedation.

How does epilepsy affect dental treatment?

Seizures may also damage the temporomandibular joints or cause an individual to aspirate a tooth into the lungs. Unfortunately, the drugs used to control this disorder can also produce side effects in the mouth. One side effect often associated with AEDs is gingival hyperplasia, an overgrowth of gum tissue.

Patients with epilepsy and the worst bad oral hygiene, periodontitis and gingivitis had an increased incidence of seizure. Seizure frequency was strongly correlated with bad oral hygiene (p = 0.010), gingivitis (p < 0.001) and periodontal disease (p < 0.001).

In the UK, around 147,000 new cases of non-melanoma skin cancer are diagnosed each year. It affects more men than women and is more common in the elderly.

Is it good to brush your teeth after eating sugar?

Use fluoride toothpaste. Use it daily. However, don’t brush your teeth right after consuming a sugary substance. When sugar does its thing on your teeth, it softens and weakens your tooth enamel. Wait an hour or so after you consume sugar to brush your teeth, so your enamel has enough time to solidify before you brush.
