Citric juices


A study published this year in the Journal of Dentistry showed that orange juice decreased enamel hardness by 84 percent. Lemon, orange and grapefruit juice can strip away the enamel with their acidity.

TIP 1. When you drink orange juice, have it in one sitting versus sipping it over a longer period.

TIP 2. Use a straw to limit juice exposure on your teeth.

TIP 3. Match citric foods with less acidic ones, like grapefruit slices in a salad.

Drinking alcohol and oral health

Drinking too much alcohol has been linked to an array of oral health problems including oral cancer, tooth decay and tooth erosion. It also increases the chances of accidental trauma or facial injury because of the higher risk of falling or being involved in an accident when people are intoxicated.

Lipsticks formulated with a blue base will help diminish any orange or yellow tones on your teeth. Darker pinks are the easiest shades to wear with little risk of making teeth look yellow. That’s because the tones in darker shades of pink are blue, vital for making teeth look whiter.

Coffee stains on teeth

White coffee will not stain your teeth as much as black coffee. The same applies for tea! Don’t brush your teeth immediately after drinking tea or coffee.

However, the ingredients you have in your coffee can also impact teeth discolouration. Some evidence suggests that high fat milks (rather than soy milk or skim milk) can help minimise caffeine from attaching to and staining teeth, since fatty milk is high in protein, which counteracts the staining.
